COMMONWEALTH NPCC UNIT NEWSLETTER
SPORTS EDUCATION PROGRAM (SEP) ARCHERY

This year, the secondary 1 and 2 cadets, have participated in the Sports Education Program, and took up the sport of archery. The course duration spanned over a period of 5 weeks, having a total of 4 sessions. With every session, the cadets have shown great improvement in their skill of handling a bow, and also learnt how to load, be in “ready” position, and also to fire an arrow from the bow. The cadets also learnt various safety procedures, and had to stick strictly to them. If they do not follow the safety procedures, fellow cadets will step forward to remind them, and the instructors will also pass a stern warning. By doing so, the cadets are able to improve their skills, have fun, as well as be in a safe surrounding during the course.

The archery courses took place every week, during CCA training sessions. During the first session of the course, we were given a brief introduction to archery, and were taught how to handle the bow that we would be using throughout the course. Various safety procedures, such as not pulling the string of the bow when it is empty, not to pick up arrows on the floor, and how to hold a bow when in a waiting position, we were made to strictly follow. These procedures help to prevent any damage to the bow, and more importantly, minimize the chances of an archer injuring him or herself. Also, the instructors kept a steady eye on the archers when we shoot, and gave us many useful pointers that helped improve our mastery in the handling of the bow. During the consecutive archery sessions, we were told to try to get “groupings” on our targets. This meant that we had to try to shoot the arrows and hit the same spot on our target. This was initially considered a difficult task to handle, but eventually, most of the cadets could manage getting grouping shots at some point of time during the sessions. The instructors were not hesitant in giving tips and pointers to the cadets, whenever they spot a mistake, and praised the cadets when they did well in their shots.

At the end of every session, the instructors will organize a small competition, whereby fellow cadets had to shoot down certain targets, or simply try to accumulate the most number of points by hitting the targets. The competitions were very tough to win, as the all the cadets were equally good shooters. The competition also helped us to be able to make quick, stead-fast decisions, as there were usually time limits, and also limits to the number of arrows given to each group. As the competitions took place, the importance of teamwork and trust also became more significant, as the cadets must have trust in each other, that everyone will give their best shot. The winners of these competitions were given presents to keep, which served as a prize to commend the effort that they have put in.

The secondary 1 and 2 cadets all had fun during the archery sessions, and have definitely improved on their skills in the handling of a bow. The sessions were enjoyable, and we have also fostered greater bonds, and made new friends. As the secondary 1 cadets are still new to the CCA, they also made good use of this archery course as an opportunity to get to know their own squad mates better. The secondary 2 cadets had the time to know each other better as well. This course is useful, as the cadets have, not only learnt a new skill, but also got the chance to build up teamwork and camaraderie among themselves. While asking for feedback about the archery course, some fellow cadets also had some comments,“ I think that it is good for us, as it helps us know our fellow squad mates better. It also prepares us for our revolver shooting next year.” said one of the secondary cadets, Pte Mun Tat. Other comments were passed by the following secondary 2 cadets, LCP Vincent and LCP Shan Yi – “the course have taught us basic aiming skills that can help us in our marksmanship badge. The competition during the end of the session teaches us the importance of teamwork”, and “It is very fun, and it helped improve my aim for the revolver shooting.”

Basically, this archery course was very successful, and the cadets have enjoyed picking up this new skill, and the course was also beneficial towards the secondary 1 cadets, as they can foster new friendships, and also for the secondary 2 cadets, to build up teamwork among themselves, so that they can work well together in the future. The 4 session ‘SEP’ course will also be of use to both the secondary ones and twos, because as they progress, they will have to go for revolver shooting, as well as for their marksman proficiency badge. Although the archery course has been conducted, and over and done with, but there are some things that will definitely stay behind – the new friendships formed, improved teamwork and cooperation, and last but not least, the skill of handling a bow and operating it safely. As the fellow cadets of the unit become closer and are cooperative, the unit will be able to head towards continual improvement.
